What are the current billing rates for services? Click here for rates.

Am I required to have a smoke detector in my residence?  Yes.  Click here to read the statute.

What is your ISO Class?  Our ISO class is a 3.  Tell your insurance agent fire code 5229 for your residential and business fire insurance policies.

Am I required to have a carbon monoxide detector in my residence? If your residence burns fossil fuels or you have an attached garage, then yes.  Click here to read the statute

My carbon monoxide detector has activated, what should I do?  Remember, carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless.  Call 9-1-1 immediately.  Leave your residence with ALL occupants, including pets if possible.  Do not attempt to ventilate the residence or re-enter the residence after leaving.  If it is cold outside, go to a neighbors residence or get inside a car - move it out of the garage if that's where it is parked.  If you have a cordless phone, take it with you.  If nobody is showing symptoms of carbon monoxide (nausea, vomiting, headaches, etc) we will respond non-emergency to your residence.  However, if someone does have symptoms of CO poisoning, an emergency response is initiated.

Can you help me install a smoke detector in my home? Yes.  Call our dispatch office, 708-352-9229, ext: 0, and we can set up an appointment for you.

Who do I call when we are testing or working on our fire alarm system? If you have an alarm system that sends a signal to a monitoring company or the fire department, please call the dispatch office, 708-352-9229, ext: 0.  We will disregard any alarm notifications for your location until you call us back.  Please remember to call.  We bill for false fire alarm responses after the 3rd false activation response.

What should I do if my fire alarm activates? Call us immediately. Although you may not see an obvious problem, you could have one that is hidden from your sight.  If you do know what caused your fire alarm to activate, call us anyway, especially if you have a central station monitoring your alarm system - the central station will most likely call us.  Our response to a fire alarm is with lights and siren. If we have factual information from a location that the fire alarm is accidental, our response changes to a non-emergency response.

Where can I have my fire extinguisher recharged? Consult the yellow pages for fire extinguisher companies.

What kind of fire extinguisher should I have in my house? An ABC fire extinguisher is the all-around best fire extinguisher for your home.  When used properly, this fire extinguisher should be able to extinguish most types of small fires.

How can I have a safety inspection done at my home?  You can contact our Fire Prevention office,        708-352-3021, Monday through Friday, between 8:00AM and 4:30PM to schedule a safety inspection.

My child is playing with matches/lighters,  what can I do? There are confidential programs that we can refer you to for immediate help.  Please contact our Fire Prevention Office, 708-352-3021, Monday through Friday, between 8:00AM and 4:30PM.  If our Fire Prevention Office is closed, please contact the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office, Juvenile Firesetter's Task Force, 800-446-1589.

Can we have a fire engine at our block party or picnic?  Yes, we do come to block parties and picnics. Just call our Public Education Division, 708-352-9229, extension 2244, and make your reservation.  Remember to make the call early, especially in the summer and early fall months.

Can you fill my pool?  For reasons of liability and expense, we cannot fill your pool.  Contact your local water department and see if they can help you.

I think something I saw is a life safety problem. Who should I call? You can contact our Fire Prevention office, 708-352-3021, Monday through Friday, between 8:00AM and 4:30PM.  If the office is closed, contact our dispatch office, 708-352-9229, extension 0.

I don't have any heat in my apartment.  Who should I call?  Please contact your local Village/City Hall and ask for the Building Department.

How do I report an emergency using a cell phone? Dial 9-1-1.  If you have a problem getting through using 9-1-1 for some reason, call 708-246-3141.

Can I use 9-1-1 for any calls to the police or fire department? 9-1-1 should only be used for emergencies.  Police and fire departments have a limited number of 9-1-1 lines and a non-emergency call may prevent someone with a true emergency from getting through.

I dialed 9-1-1 but it says that I don't have that service?  There are several problems that may have caused this to happen.  If it's an emergency, call 708-246-3141.  After we respond to your emergency, we will try to help you determine the problem that you encountered.

Why do you respond with lights and siren?  Responding to calls with lights and siren can be very dangerous for pedestrians, other drivers, and us.  For this reason, we try to evaluate the information that we receive from our callers and respond based on that information.  If the call is perceived to be an emergency, we will respond with lights and siren.

When I called for an ambulance, a fire engine came too, why?  This will happen for many different reasons.  Our engines have paramedics onboard and carry advanced life support equipment.  In some cases the engine may be closer to an incident than the ambulance and the paramedics on the engine can start immediate advanced life support before the ambulance arrives.  Another reason could be that when the call was received, it was identified as one that may require advanced life support care, examples would be anything cardiac related, diabetic, falls, seizures, difficulty breathing, and many others.  When we receive calls that have this potential, we send an engine to assist the ambulance personnel.

What should I do if the tornado sirens are sounding? Do not call 9-1-1, unless you have an emergency - reporting a funnel cloud or tornado is an emergency.  The National Weather Service suggests you follow this guide:

·      In a home, go to the basement and get under the stairwell, or under a heavy piece of furniture. If there is no basement, go to an interior closet, hall or bathroom on the lowest floor and stay away from windows. Cover your head with pillows or sofa cushions.
·    In schools, hospitals, churches and office buildings, go to small interior rooms or halls on the lowest floor. Stay away from windows. Avoid large open areas with free span roofs such as gymnasiums and cafeterias.
·    In steel and concrete high rise buildings, it is not necessary to get to the lowest floor, but go to interior halls, bathrooms or closets.  Stay away from windows.
·    In shopping centers, avoid large open areas and glass. Seek shelter in bathrooms, small interior spaces and behind counters. Do not attempt to escape in your vehicle.
·    Abandon mobile homes and vehicles for a nearby reinforced building. As a last resort lie flat in a ditch. Do not seek shelter under an overpass.

Should I call the police or fire department if the tornado sirens are sounding? No, unless you are reporting an emergency.  During severe weather, the police and fire departments usually are inundated with numerous phone calls.  Seek shelter.  Bring a battery operated TV or radio with you for information.

I don't have any heat in my rented home or apartment, what should I do?  Contact your local city or village building department.

What should I do if I see a tornado or funnel cloud?  Dial 9-1-1 and report it.  Early notification of a tornado can save lives.  We will want to know where you are, the direction of the tornado, if it is on the ground, the extent of damage in the area, and if anyone is obviously injured.

What should I do if my power goes out? If you don't have power, look and see if your area is without power.  If your area is without power, call Commonwealth Edison, 800-334-7661.  If you are the only one without power, call us and we can try to help you find the source of the problem.

Does your department do any soliciting? We only have one form of fundraising and it's a mailing from the Pleasantview Firefighter's Association.  The donations received from the fundraiser support YOUR firefighters.
