- Advanced Life Support (ALS) is a level of care that usually requires the administration of drugs or other invasive procedure to stabilize a patient.   Basic Life Support (BLS) does not require the administration of drugs but requires first aid. Refusals are patients that were evaluated by a paramedic but they chose not to be transported to an area hospital. Other are situations where an ambulance may have been requested but a condition existed that resulted in no need for a transport or no patient was at the location.
